Daesung Jib
Blood Soup for Breakfast (and at 2 AM): Daesung Jib in Dongdaemun
There are places in Seoul where the regulars don't even look at the menu. Daesung Jib (어머니대성집) is one of them. It opens at 6 AM, and people are already there — not stumbling in, but sitting down, like they've been doing this for years. Because most of them have.
What to Expect
The star dish here is seonji haejang-guk — a deeply savory beef broth soup made with coagulated ox blood. If that sounds alarming, think of it like a very soft, silky tofu in texture, with a mild iron-rich flavor that the rich broth rounds out completely. It's one of Korea's classic hangover cures, but calling it just a hangover soup undersells it. People eat this for breakfast, lunch, and late-night meals because it's genuinely good — warm, restorative, the kind of thing that resets you.
This is not a tourist-facing restaurant. The menu is straightforward, the portions are honest, and the crowd is almost entirely Korean regulars. That's exactly why it's worth going.
What to Order
Seonji haejang-guk (blood soup) — the reason this place exists. The broth is murky and deeply beefy, the seonji (coagulated ox blood) comes in soft cubes, and there's usually beansprout and green onion in there too. Eat it with the rice on the side or mix it in. If you're new to it, start with a few spoonfuls of broth before committing — you'll be fine.
Yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef bibimbap) — if the soup feels like a stretch, this is your entry point. Fresh beef tartare over rice with vegetables, mixed together at the table. At 17,000 KRW it's not cheap for bibimbap, but the beef quality is noticeably good. It comes with a side bowl of haejang-guk, so you're getting both worlds anyway. Tip from regulars: mix in some of the salted fermented seafood (jeotgal) and a few of the chopped Cheongyang chilies on the table to give it some heat and depth.
The side dishes — they serve barley tea in traditional makgeolli bowls, which is a small thing but a nice one. The radish salad and kimchi lean sweet, so just know that going in.
Atmosphere & Vibe
Three floors of seating, so it can handle a crowd — good for groups of four or more. It's not a pretty space. Fluorescent lighting, practical furniture, the kind of place where the food is the point and nobody's trying to make it Instagram-worthy. Older regulars in the morning. A mix of late-night workers, nightlife people, and the occasional very confused tourist after midnight. All of it somehow works.
Monday is closed, which feels almost philosophically correct for a place this no-frills.

What People Are Saying
"🥩 Premium Yukhoe Bibimbap & 24/7 Service The Highlights: * Top-Quality Beef Tartare: The Yukhoe Bibimbap (17,000 KRW) features incredibly fresh beef. * Killer Side Soup: It comes with a side of Haejang-guk (hangover soup) that is absolutely fantastic and complements the meal perfectly. * Pro Tip: If the bibimbap starts to feel a bit plain, mix in some salted seafood (jeotgal) and chopped Cheongyang chili peppers to adjust the spice level to your liking! * Atmosphere: They serve barley tea in traditional Makgeolli bowls, which adds a fun, rustic touch to the experience. * Open 24/7: A reliable spot any time of day or night. * Spacious: With three floors of seating, it’s great for large groups. Things to Consider: * Value for Money: It’s not the cheapest option around, so it’s more of a treat than a "budget" find. * Sweet Side Dishes: The radish salad (mu-muchim) and kimchi are quite sweet, which might not suit everyone’s palate."
"It is a traditional restaurant. It's famous place between older generations. The soup rice is excellent and they do traditional way until now. The price is not cheap but it deserves. Recommended place for all good friends. Soup is very decent and neat!"
"I can’t judge how good this korean soup is, i m a foreigner, a tourist. i found on google. It was good for me, the rice with soup, after golf. But i was impressed by their final decision to accept us at this lunch break hour, we came right at 3pm. We are disrupting their break. I thank them for not disappointing us."
