Korean Fine Dining in Hannam-dong: Gongi Is the Lunch Splurge That Actually Delivers
Some restaurants in Seoul are pretty on the outside and forgettable on the plate. Gongi (공기) is the opposite. It's quiet, precise, and the kind of place Korean friends bring you when they want to show you what local fine dining actually looks like.
What to Expect
Gongi runs a 6-course tasting menu starting at ₩68,000 for lunch — that's roughly $50 USD, which, for this level of cooking in Hannam-dong, is genuinely reasonable. Dinner will cost more, so if you're watching your budget, the lunch sitting is the move.
The menu is rooted in Korean ingredients — seasonal vegetables, seafood, beef — but the presentation is refined without being fussy. Think clean broths, precise knife work, and flavors that let one ingredient do the talking instead of layering sauce on sauce. If you've had Korean food mostly at barbecue restaurants or jjigae spots, this will feel different. Quieter. More considered. Not intimidating — just thoughtful.
One dish that surprises first-timers: the uni bibimbap (성게 비빔밥). Sea urchin sounds alarming if you've never had it, but good uni is sweet, slightly briny, and almost creamy — nothing fishy about it. Here it comes on a bowl of rice loaded with littleneck clams (bajirak), and the combination is something you'll be thinking about on the flight home. The uni looks dry at first glance, but don't worry — it's a proper serving and the sweetness comes through.
What to Order
Beef cube with wasabi — This is the dish that gets talked about most, and it earns it. Clean, quality beef, that sharp hit of wasabi cutting through the fat. Sounds simple. Isn't. It's on the standard menu, so you'll get it without needing to add on.
Uni bibimbap — There's usually a supplement to upgrade your bibimbap course to sea urchin. Pay it. The base bibimbap already comes with clams, so the uni just takes it somewhere else entirely.
Eggplant with prawn fritters — Worth adding as an extra course if it's available. The eggplant is fried until caramelized on the outside, and there's a whole chunky shrimp inside. It's oily, yes — but in the best possible way. Just know what you're getting into.
One honest note: the pork stew, if it's on the menu, doesn't quite match the rest. A few diners have found it underwhelming compared to the seafood and beef dishes. If you have the choice, steer toward the fish or beef options.
Atmosphere & Vibe
Open kitchen, calm energy, the kind of light that makes food look the way it tastes. Not loud. Not a place for big group catch-ups — go with one or two people who actually want to pay attention to what's in front of them. Good for groups technically, but the intimacy is better in smaller numbers. The service is attentive without hovering.

What People Are Saying
"If you’re looking for a high-end Korean dining experience in Hannam-dong, this place is truly exceptional. Every dish highlights the natural flavors of the ingredients, and the seasoning is perfectly balanced so that nothing overpowers the core taste of the food. I will definitely visit again."
"Overall, food was really good. Saw some reviews saying it was overpriced and food quantity was small. I think it was just right for the price. Highly recommend the Gongi vegetable chips, served with I believe a wasabi mayo sauce, and some caviar (not sure if imitation or real). Really great way to start the meal. The beef cubes with wasabi is a must order. Clean flavours of the stated ingredients. The fried eggplant and shrimps were also fantastic, fried and caramelised on the outside so a beautiful crunch. A chunky shrimp nested inside the eggplant. Slight sweet with some umami. Though this dish is quite oily. I would not order the pork stew, this brought the meal experience down and was disappointing. Can get better at the cheaper local restaurants. Good restaurant to come to for a light lunch."
"for a truly great lunch tasting @ gongi krw68,000 6-course menu with price supplement we selected the cube beef, and added the eggplant with prawn fritters (so 7-course), and select the uni for the bibimbab all the dishes quite fine and exquisite appertizer - vegetables stock with chicken very tasty fish ceviche a good tender cut on a lime sauce also tasty vegetable pancake with prawn, kind of nicely done fried scallions, & prawns was good beef cube steak striploin underwhelming, nicely done of course, but too many reviews said it was so good, indeed nicely prepared & good for the quality of beef at this lunch price..maybe can pick the fish instead. the uni bibimbab was excellent, the best dish, very enjoyable. the uni look dry, but actually a good size serving and sweet..and the bibimbab with loads of asari (littleneck clams) was very good, very tasty. dessert was a good standard penna cotta 5.4.2025"
