Real Gopchang, No Gamey Smell: A Local's Guide to Gopchang Uijeonseol in Noryangjin

If you've been told to try gopchang but quietly dread the smell — this is the place to start. Gopchang Uijeonseol (곱창의전설) in Noryangjin is one of those Seoul intestine spots where even first-timers finish the whole plate.

What to Expect

Gopchang is beef small intestine, grilled over charcoal or a gas flame right at your table. It's rich, slightly chewy, and when done well, has this almost buttery depth that's hard to describe until you've had it. The thing that puts people off — that sharp, gamey offal smell — is genuinely not a problem here. The intestines are cleaned properly. You'll notice the difference immediately compared to less careful places.

Every table comes with a tin of dried seaweed (gim). That's not an accident. You wrap a piece of grilled gopchang in it, maybe with a bit of garlic, and it cuts through the richness perfectly. It's a small detail, but it tells you something about how this place thinks about the meal.

The owner runs the place largely solo, so service isn't fast. That's not a complaint, just a fact. Come with someone you can actually talk to, order early, and don't expect things to arrive all at once.

What to Order

Garlic egg tripe (whole) — around 14,300 won. This is the move for two people. The egg tripe (란창) has a softer texture than regular gopchang and a slightly milder flavor, which makes it a good entry point. The garlic version adds sweetness and depth when it chars at the edges.

Vegetable tripe — around 13,800 won. Order this alongside the egg tripe if you're two or three people. The vegetables balance the fat and give the grill something to work with between bites of intestine.

Fried rice — 2,500 won. Do not skip this. Multiple regulars call it out specifically, and they're right to. It's the kind of fried rice that uses the leftover fat and flavor from whatever just came off your grill. At 2,500 won it's almost unreasonably good. This is your closer. Order it last.

Corn cheese is also available if you want something safe and crowd-pleasing mid-meal.

Atmosphere & Vibe

It's not a polished space. Expect low lighting, tight seating, and the kind of smoke-tinged air that means the grill is working. The word that comes up in Korean reviews again and again is nostalgia — and you can feel why. This is a neighborhood spot near Noryangjin, not a tourist-facing restaurant. The clientele are locals grabbing drinks after work, couples revisiting old memories, people who know exactly what they came for.

Good for groups. Not ideal if someone in your party is squeamish about offal or can't handle a bit of smoke. There's no reservation system, so just show up.

Come on a weekday if you can — weekends get busier and the solo owner gets stretched thin. And when they ask if you want to add seaweed to your fried rice, say yes.

What People Are Saying

"Nice place to have a drink with their food."

"* Whole Garlic Egg Tripe (14,300 won) * Vegetable Tripe (13,800 won) * Steamed Egg (4,000 won) * Corn Cheese (5,000 won) * Fried Rice (2,500 won) Add Seaweed (Cheese 3,000 won) Be aware that the owner works alone, so he can be very busy. Most people's reviews mention the word "nostalgia." I also visited to reminisce with my girlfriend, and there was absolutely no controversy about those memories. Many times, the tripe is difficult to eat due to its fishy or offal smell, but the tripe here is incredibly delicious. I recommend ordering the vegetables and egg tripe for two people. For a final drink, I highly recommend the corn cheese or fried rice. We visited to reminisce. We had a great meal together! Go check it out! "First of all, the review is that it was tasteless and the portions were small. I won't go back. I ordered one serving each of vegetables, sundae, and egg gopchang for three people, but the portions were so small that I thought they would come out separately. The portions were so small that I even ate fried rice, but wow, the rice was flying around... It wasn't sticky at all. I also ate the free rice, and of course, the free rice was flying around and not sticky at all. The price wasn't worth it either. I went here after searching for a good gopchang restaurant, but I can't believe the reviews. The photo is for three people, and when you remove the perilla leaves, the gopchang isn't piled up, it's just spread out on the grill. This is the first time I've written such a long review. The reviews were good, but I feel like I was scammed."
