WOW Shin nae tteok(spicy Tteokbokki)
The Tteokbokki Spot Near Sookmyung Women's University That Locals Keep Coming Back To
Our curator has been eating here since 2015. That's not a fun fact — that's a decade of loyalty. At these prices, WOW Shin nae tteok (와우신내떡) earns it.
What to Expect
Tteokbokki is Korea's defining street food: chewy cylinder-shaped rice cakes simmered in a spicy, slightly sweet sauce. It's comfort food in the most literal sense — the kind of thing Korean students eat between classes, after exams, and on cold days when nothing else will do.
This spot does it properly. You pick your spice level (level 1.5 is a solid starting point if you're unsure — even reviewers who struggle with heat say it's manageable). The sauce leans slightly creamy, almost rose-flavored, which takes the raw edge off the chili. The cheese on top gets torched, so it's actually melted and slightly caramelized rather than the rubbery slab you'll find at lesser places.
Don't expect a large space or a slick interior. This is a compact local shop in a university neighborhood. You're here for the food.
What to Order
The set meal — tteokbokki + fries (tteokbokki set). Order the set. This is not a suggestion. The fries come topped with garlic dipping sauce and sweet chili — two sauces that have no right being this good on a simple potato. Multiple reviewers say the fries outshone the tteokbokki. That's impressive, and also slightly absurd. Get both. Let the sauces do their thing.
Spice level 1.5 for two people if you're eating with someone who's heat-sensitive. Level 2 if you want actual spice without suffering.
Skip the mini-me fries if they're available as a separate item — reviews suggest they underwhelm compared to the standard fries.
Atmosphere & Vibe
University neighborhood energy. The area around Sookmyung Women's University (Garwol Station) is dense with cheap, good, no-fuss eating spots, and this one draws a line during peak hours. Weekday lunch (11am–2pm) can get crowded fast, especially around noon. If you can make it there when doors open at 11am or show up in the early afternoon lull around 1:30–2pm, you'll have an easier time.
It's not the kind of place you linger. You eat, you finish, you leave satisfied. That's the point.

What People Are Saying
"Fried potato was more delicious than tteokbokki."
"I visited here two years after my freshman year, and it's still delicious. I ordered the 1.5 level set for two, and even I, who can't eat spicy food, enjoyed it. It tastes like Shinjeon Tteokbokki, the rice is delicious, the French fries are delicious, everything is delicious. The best!!"
"I was planning to get some yeop-tteok (spicy rice cake) but I remembered seeing a line of college students, so I decided to try it. Like yeop-tteok, there's a spiciness level, but it's not the same as super spicy. I had level 2, and it was just the right amount of spicy, and the sauce and cheese on top were really tasty... The cheese was like they'd toasted it with a torch, and the cheese itself wasn't hard like rubber, so I didn't get sick of it until I finished it. The sauce was also a bit like rose? Creamy. Anyway, it was delicious. The fries were cute and tasty, and the mini-me fries, which had good reviews, weren't as good as I'd hoped. There are a lot of tteokbokki places in Sookmyung Women's University, but I'm glad I found this place. Haha"
